Will Trump be found guilty, do hard time?: Letters

Nov 27, 2023

Bring Donald Trump to trial on all charges against him

If found guilty (which is likely) place him on home confinement (ankle bracelet and all) for the maximum amount of time called for by the statute violated.

The United States of America is not a banana republic, and no one is above the law.

If convicted, confinement must be mandated and enforced.

But putting a former U.S. president in prison is a peculiar predicament.

Would Secret Service agents be required to protect the former president while he’s behind bars? Would he chow down with fellow inmates?

Would he shower with other convicts? Such an exceptional situation requires an exceptional solution. Home confinement may be the best response to this unfortunate circumstance.

Trump should serve time in prison if he is convicted

Although no other former president has served time in prison, in this case, Trump should definitely serve time for his role in attempting to overturn the presidential election in 2020.

Trump is a horrible leader, and only cares about himself.

America must make an example of him and his evil ways, or else we as a nation may not survive.

I am so glad I changed parties after Charlottesville 2017.

— Brian Healy, Lake Forest

Trump will not serve any hard or soft time

In the event Trump is convicted of any of the charges leveled against him at both the federal and state level he will not serve any hard or soft time. The appeal process will keep him free forever and a day. If sentenced to physical incarceration the logistics would be impossible to implement through our current penal systems. Hypothetically, he could pardon himself once elected president. The court battles that would ensue would be comparable to a voyage on the Titanic. Lots of casualties and almost everyone loses. To this end President Trump could fabricate a health issue, invoke the 25th Amendment whereby the vice president takes over temporarily and pardons Trump. I’m sure that scenario is on the table of his inner circle.
